Team Selection and Results

A Grade

Results: A Grade defeat Adelaide Uni (9.13 67 - 9.9 63)
Best: Harry Willis, Jack Carruthers, Armando Iannunzio, Tully Kennett, Jamison Rankine
Goals: Armando Iannunzio 2, Magnus Illman 2, Will Kennett 2, Harry Willis 2, Henry Read 1
Coaches Report:

Round 1 saw hot weather and a first up game against Adelaide University. The lads had worked hard all summer and were really excited for a game against the freshly relegated Blacks.

It was an even encounter for most of the day with neither team able to take any real ascendency. Both midfields were tough at stoppage making it hard to get clean clearances and entries inside 50. There was definitely a bit of feeling in the contest and at times this resulted in some poor discipline from our guys. A number of silly free kicks coupled with us converting 16 marks inside F50 into only 2 goals meant we didn’t capitalise on our periods on control to get the lead we could have. Pleasingly our forward line was working really hard to apply pressure and keep the ball inside F50. This effort amounted to 7 goals from free play including some terrific snap goals from Will Kennett, Magnus Illman and Armando Iannunzio.

The warm conditions and larger oval turned the last quarter into a war of attrition with players from both teams out on their feet and suffering severe cramp. We looked the better team as we got nearly two goals up but to Uni’s credit, they hung in there and fought right to the end. There were some crucial moments from Harry Willis including a well finished goal and spoil inside D50 late in the game but in the end we came out on top by a few points thanks to our guys refusing to give anything but 100% effort.

It was a really pleasing win that meant a lot to many past and present players and POSFC people.

This weekend we move on to Lockleys away where we will encounter more hot conditions and a Lockleys team that we haven’t beaten. It will make for a challenging game, but I can’t wait to see the lads give it their all.

See you at the footy.

Results: Adelaide Uni defeat B Grade (6.8 44 - 5.9 39)
Best: Tom Felice, Jonty Jamieson, Sebastian Wilckens, Sam Carruthers, Luke Lovelock
Goals: Sam Carruthers 1, Eddie Elias 1, Jonty Jamieson 1, Louis Mcrostie 1, Lucas Saunders 1
Coaches Report:

Well wasn’t that a flat end to what was one of better Round 1 performances over the last few years.  I asked for us to come ready to play and no slow starts, and for Round 1 it was pretty good.  One of the struggles we (and all Reserves sides) have is the fact we don’t really get an opportunity to play together as a squad in the real sense until round 1, and this year with our squads all so strong, we really didn’t know who would play until Friday before the game, which isn’t ideal but reality, and I thought for a 21 that was having its first hit with venom we were good.

Overall, what let us down was our set up defensively which I think flows through to the fact we were caught up in the emotion of the game the adrenalin that comes with that, which lead to un-disciplinary acts and a want to be the game day winner or impact the win.  I have said it many times before and this year I really want to reflect this, I want us to play right on the edge, I will not challenge anyone who takes that game on (at the right times) stands up for his team mate and impacts ball and body with ferocity, but it needs to be balanced and within the rules, leave the interpretation to the umps but ultimately keep the emotion out of the game as best we can, be ruthless but clinical and after that game always be in a position to be able to have a beer with the Oppo.  It’s not personal, it’s a game that we will win.

I just want to mention a majority of our best players on the ground were first years or players that have had little reserves grade footy, I thought Tom Felice, Jonty Jamison and Olly Ormsby all played great footy on the day, set up well and Olly gave our mids first look at the stoppage which is great.  Then there were our usual suspects in Seb Wilkens, our skipper Sam Carruthers, Lovers, Sam Creighton and the Gliz with his run of half back.

We have all the weapons now to be a finals performer, we will obviously be affected by injuries and call ups to the A grade, but that is Reserves footy, with that in mind we just need to commit to a team first mentality and who knows ….

Onwards to Lockleys @ Lockleys on ANZAC Day, what a privilege to get to play on such a day!

Queens

Results: Mitcham Hawks defeat Queens (8.5 53 - 3.5 23)
Best: Farah McConnell-Psaltis, Alice Montgomery, Tallulah Jongeneel, Ashlea Carter, Evie Blanks -Saunders
Goals: Lucy Hammond 2, Rosie Harvey 1
Coaches Report (written by Ash Carter):

The Queen’s went down to Price Memorial oval on the weekend and they couldn’t have asked for a better start, dominating the first quarter with pressure, intensity, and control around the contest. Their midfield set the tone early, winning the ball and driving it forward repeatedly, which saw them take a small lead at quarter time.

The second quarter began just as strongly, with Queen’s continuing to look sharp and in control. With Lucy Hammond instrumental in the early stages, kicking two goals and capitalising on the Queens momentum.

However, as the game continued, a few of Mitcham key players took this opportunity, and piled on goals quickly, swinging the momentum. By halftime, they had moved ahead 26 to 16.

From there, Mitcham extended their lead in the second half despite plenty of standout performances from the Queens. The McConnell- Psaltis sisters were exceptional, applying relentless tackling pressure to girls twice their size. Alice Montgomery and Tally Jongeneel were also crucial for our defence rebounding every one of Mitcham’s forward 50 entries.

Although the Queens showed a strong opening performance they couldn’t quite hold on against Mitcham, going down 3.5 (23) to 8.5 (53). The scoreboard definitely did not reflect their early efforts, and the Queens showed promising signs to build on moving forward.

C Grade

Results: Adelaide Uni defeat C Grade (14.5 89 - 9.11 65)
Best: Alex Lee, max davis, Archie Williams, Patrick Brooks, Stewart Watts
Goals: Archie Williams 2, Harvey Wood 2, Eddie Cook 1, Ethan Holmes 1, Daniel Sims 1, Seb Sobels 1, Toby Wilks 1
Coaches Report:

We opened our season against Adelaide Uni, ultimately going down 14.5 (89) to 9.11 (65) in a match that showed plenty of promise despite the result.

It was a slow start from us, with Adelaide Uni capitalising early and putting scoreboard pressure on. However, as the game settled, we began to find our rhythm and worked our way into the contest. For long periods, we controlled territory and time in our forward half, giving ourselves multiple opportunities to impact the scoreboard.

Unfortunately, costly errors and lapses in transition defence proved the difference. While we were able to generate inside 50s, we couldn’t consistently capitalise, while Adelaide Uni made the most of their chances, often scoring from turnover in dangerous areas.

There were plenty of positives to take away, particularly from a young side featuring eight club debutants. Alex Lee was outstanding across half-back, intercepting strongly and providing great rebound. Through the midfield, Max Davis and Stewart Watts battled hard all day and applied consistent pressure.

Patrick Brooks’ one-on-one defending was a highlight, while Archie Williams’ running power and ability to link up play added real drive. With continued growth and connection, there are strong signs ahead for this group.
