ROUND TWO
A GRADE 2 FROM 2
B’S GRAB FIRST WIN
A GRADE – Pembroke 15.10 (100) def Lockleys 8.12 (60)
In warm conditions for the second week running, the Kings superior skill and fitness ran over the top to produce our second win of the season. Kicking into a slight breeze we had the better of the opening term, with goals to Henry Read (2), Will Kennett and Armando Iannunzio to give us a five-point lead. In the ruck Ollie Ormsby was giving us first hand to the ball in the centre, helping to give us the early advantage.
A fine long goal to Jack Carruthers early in the second term saw the lead increase, but then the game tightened up for a time. Tully Kennett was dominating the mid-field and providing loads of drive, the Kings with two further goals, increasing the advantage to 17 points at the long break.
The breeze dropped as the third term saw Lockleys out of the blocks early and they had the better of the quarter, attacking well down the clubrooms side to kick four goals to two, as we missed a few sets shots in front goal. Henry Read kicked a great steadier of a goal during this quarter as the team went in with a seven-point lead going into the last term.
In the last quarter Lockleys made an early foray forward but were held by the defence which had been led brilliantly all day by skipper Ollie Harms. From there on it was all Pembroke as Read kicked an excellent left-foot goal up against the behind post. Will Kennett then goaled to get the lead out past three goals. The last 15 minutes saw Pembroke dominate, and the lads added four more goals to win by 40 points.
Best players were Mitch Thiele, Tully Kennett, ruckman Ollie Ormsby, Ollie Harms and Armando Iannunzio, who kicked three clever goals. Henry Read was a great presence up forward and ended up with six majors as the Kings maintained their unbeaten record.
Injury update – Max Read and Dylan Hopkins were both missing through injury on Saturday, hopefully both will be back soon. Levi Johnston hurt his knee during the game and we have fingered crossed for him.
B GRADE – Pembroke 6.11 (47) def Lockleys 6.7 (43)
The Kings started well to lead 2.4 to 0.1 at quarter time. Just the one goal came from each side in the second term, while Lockleys added three to two in the third. The Demons hit the front in the last term but thanks the accurate boot of James O’Halloran the Kings regained the lead and hung on to it, to win by four points. Best: Luke Lovelock in defence, Tom Reid in ruck, skipper Sam Carruthers, Tom Felice, Venkhatesh Sivashanker all played well the B’s first win.
C GRADE – Pembroke 9.4 (58) lost to Lockleys 11.10 (76)
After a tight first half, Lockleys kicked away in the third term to add 5.2 to 2.1 which effectively decided the game. Best: Vinnie Zito, Archie Williams, James Brennan, Daniel Sims, William Edmonds
D GRADE – Pembroke 8.9 (57) lost to ROCS 14.11 (95)
Aided by a slight breeze, the Kings were on fire early kicking the first five goals to lead by 29 points at quarter time, Pete Jones a focal point with two early majors. Lockleys played well in the second term to narrow the gap to just nine points and won the game in the third when they added 5.2 to 3.2 into the breeze. It was all one-way traffic in the last term, Lockleys in the end too good by 38 points. Best: Fred Ligertwood, Hugo Sutton, Ash Rawlinson, Jesse Ferres, Will Belej. Playing coach Jake Elias let from the front and Charlie Bowen made a welcome return and kicked a couple of good goals.
QUEENS – Pembroke 4.5 (29) lost to Glenunga 4.7 (31)
After conceding the first goal, the Queens responded with goals to Indira Panelli, Ash Carter and Evie Blanks-Saunders to lead at quarter time by 12 points. They were held goalless in the next two quarters as Glenunga were up by 10 points with a term to go. Chloe Tucker goaled from a tight angle early in the last, and thanks to determined defence Glenunga were held scoreless for the rest of the game. Two further chances were missed by the Queens and with the ball in attack the siren went, the final margin just two points. Best: Alice Montgomery, Ashlea Carter, Indira Panelli, Lila Lloyd, Alice Emmett
