The Kings Reserves suffered an 11-point loss (50–61) to Edwardstown at Edwardstown Oval, but the performance was a tale of two halves. After a strong and composed opening quarter, we lost momentum through the second term as ball security, skill execution, and adherence to the game plan deteriorated. A six-goal-to-one second quarter proved decisive, creating a deficit that ultimately could not be overcome despite an outstanding second-half response.

Our biggest challenge was not talent or capability, but consistency of concentration and execution. When we maintained possession, used short kicks, and showed patience with the ball, we moved it effectively and controlled play. However, during the second quarter, composure gave way to rushed decisions, long kicks to contests, and reduced movement ahead of the ball, allowing Edwardstown to seize momentum.

The second half demonstrated our resilience and potential. Pressure standards increased significantly, defensive structures improved, and we recommitted to playing our brand. Edwardstown's previously uncontested movement became restricted, while our work rate and accountability lifted across the ground. We won much of the play in the final two quarters and came within striking distance despite trailing heavily at halftime.

A key takeaway from the match was the importance of sustaining effort, discipline, and work rate for the full four quarters. When we played with intensity, accountability, and desperation around the contest, we were able to challenge one of the competition's stronger teams. The challenge moving forward is ensuring those standards are maintained from the opening bounce until the final siren.

Heading to Edwardstown for Round 17, the equation was simple. Win and our place in the finals was guaranteed.

In a back and forth contest, Edwardstown continued to challenge throughout the game, but we were able to maintain control and respond whenever things tightened up. A strong four quarter effort eventually saw us come away with an important 11.7 (73) to 7.11 (53) victory and, most importantly, lock away a spot in the finals.

Fred Ligertwood was dangerous and creative forward of the ball, kicking two goals of his own while setting up several more with some excellent decision making. Michael Guerin embraced a shift further up the ground, competing hard and providing an important link between our defence and attack.

Through the midfield, Stewart Watts and Dan Sims were everywhere. The pair had a huge influence both inside and outside the contest, winning the hard ball before working tirelessly to provide options around the ground. Will Holland was another standout, showing great composure with ball in hand while his hard running repeatedly found him in space, allowing him to push forward and kick two important goals.

Six weeks ago, we were sitting 8th on the ladder with plenty of work ahead of us. To respond the way this group has and now guarantee ourselves a place in the finals is a fantastic achievement and a credit to the entire squad.

There's still plenty to play for. We finish the home and away season with a huge clash against top of the table Walkerville this week. A win, combined with a few other results falling our way, could remarkably see us climb into the top three and earn a double chance.
