KINGS STAY UP IN DIVISION THREE AFTER WIN AT EDWARDSTOWN

It was a big day at Edwardstown for the club, as the C grade locked away a spot in the finals with a great win. The B grade finished hard late but went down but are still a chance to finish in the top five. While the A grade trailed all day to come from behind and win, locking in a spot in Division three for 2027!

Pembroke 9.6 (60) won at Edwardstown 6.13 (49)

On a bright sunny day, Edwardstown had most of the early play forward and in the early stages were held out well by our defence led by Dylan Hopkins and the returning Mitch Thiele. The Towns finally broke through to goal after 10 minutes but then the Kings were straight into attack after the bounce as Tom Duffy found Henry Read who kicked a behind. Then Edwardstown took control to kick two in a row as the Kings looked behind the eight-ball. With some good drive coming from Tyson Matthews, Will Kennett then slipped a hand ball to Armando Iannunzio who kicked a clever goal to get the margin back to 14 points at quarter time.

The opening 10 minutes of the second term saw both sides in the game, then after a miskick from a Towns defender, Tully Kennett marked and goaled to narrow the margin. Edwardstown went forward on occasion and missed several shots as the Kings defence hung in there. Then late in the term a clever kick from Kane Pearson found big Rory Switajewski who marked and goaled on the siren, to get the margin back to just six points at the long break.

The third term saw Edwardstown again miss several shots on goal which kept us in the hunt. Then from a stoppage Magnus Illman found Henry Read who won a free and goaled from long range, so after six minutes in was Pembroke 4.2 to Edwardstown 3.11. The Towns then steadied and started to kick more accurately with three goals across the next 15 minutes to ease out to a 21-point lead late in the term. Edwardstown went deep in attack once more, but Thiele marked for the Kings and repelled, the ball finding Henry Read who passed to Iannunzio who goaled in the pocket to give the Kings a badly needed goal in time-on, to get the margin back to 15-points at three quarter time, 6.12 to 5.3.

Could the fitness factor count for the second week in a row? The Kings started brilliantly as Henry Read led up well to mark and kick the first goal for the quarter. Then some fine work that started with Thiele in defence saw Matthews mark inside 50 and goal, to make the margin just three points. Like last week the Kings were finding a way but then Edwardstown marked 20 metres out dead in front and missed to give us a reprieve. A few minutes later, Tully Kennett flicked a hand ball to Archie Richardson who kicked to Henry Read, he won a free for hanging on and goal to give us the lead for the first time for the day. After some tight footy, Tom Reid won a tap at a throw-in on the wing, Illman swooped to kick long and find Read, who went back and kicked his fourth to put us further in front with minutes left. It was soon all over in a great come from behind win which moves us up to seventh and out of the horrors of relegation territory with a round to go.

B GRADE

Pembroke 7.8 (50) beaten at Edwardstown 8.13 (61)

Edwardstown was first to goal, then at the midway point of the term Eddie Elias soccered one through from the goal square. The Towns added another to lead by seven points at quarter time and then went on the offensive to kick five in the second to nil in the second.

Facing a 34-point deficit, the Kings worked back into the game in the third term as Finn Burns and Archie Allen goaled. The Towns clawed one back to keep a 28 point lead at the last change. The last term saw the Kings get right back into the game as Alex Favaretto goaled, then shortly after kicked a great check side on the left to get the margin back to nine points with 11 minutes left. Edwardstown then steadied to add a goal to push the lead out.

With just under three minutes left Venka Sivashanker goaled to get one back, but sadly the run home came too late as we went down by 11 points. If the B grade can win next week against top side Walkerville, they will stay in the top five, if we go down will need some luck to stay in.

C GRADE

Pembroke 11.7 (73) won at Edwardstown 7.11 (53)

The Kings were a slow out of the gates conceding the first goal early but then midway through the opening term went on a three-goal rampage in four minutes as Harvey Wood goaled from a snap, Eddie Cook marked to goal and then Jesse Ferres kicked one from a tight angle. Edwardstown goaled at the back end of the term, the margin the Kings way 3.3 to 2.3 at quarter time.

At the start of the second term, Edwardstown goaled early to level things up but then good play from Cook saw Will Holland snap one through on the left to put us back in front. The Towns then jagged a goal off the ground as soon after Fred Ligertwood won a free and 25 metre penalty to kick another. Good movement out the middle saw Cook do well to kick his second. Edwardstown goaled to get the margin back under a goal but just before half time Ligertwood sent thru a major to give the Kings a 11-point advantage at the long break.

The third term saw neither team give much away, the only goal coming at the five-minute mark courtesy of a free kick to Holland who kicked his second. With a 17-point lead the Kings heading into the last term, we were in the box seat to win and were helped when Wood marked deep in attack to kick a goal after a couple of minutes. When he added a two more midway through the term, the game was done and dusted, the final margin 20 points to make it five in a row and lock in a final five spot.

D GRADE

Pembroke 3.2 (20) lost to Walkerville 19.18 (132) at Haslam.

After a great win last week, it was a tough old day for the lads at home.
