It was wet weather football at its best on Saturday, as Haslam Oval copped a hammering of rain. The C Graders got soaked and while the weather improved throughout the day, Haslam's deck got worse and worse.
Unfortunately, the results also didn't go our way, with losses across the board. The A Grade lost by four points to Edwardstown, the B Grade by one point, and the Cs by 62. At Walkerville, a very strong Cats side defeated our D Grade, and the Queens went down to Mitcham.
Onto Round 9, as we head to Walkerville, where we are after a big response.

A tough few results.
Great to see Eddie "Smash" Elias bring up his 50th game for the Kings in a ripper performance. His season so far has earnt him the call up for an A Grade debut this weekend.
How good was it also to see A Grade coach Charles "Chucky" Canny running out in the C Grade!? By all reports he hasn't missed a beat. This week A Grade runners Alex "Jarvo" Jarvis and Jed Morgan will be donning a guernsey to help with numbers in the C Grade too. Let's get around them!
Jakey's Ds might have got a reality check after flying high in Round 7, but we know that's not keeping them down. They will return home this week to play the Blacks in a curtain raiser for next week's Past Players Day against Uni.
Bad luck also to the Queens who had been on a strong run up until last week. The loss of Skipper Ash Carter will be missed as she jets off for a Euro Summer, but this will create good opportunities for some of the younger girls to shine!

Some very notable changes this week.
Smash comes in for his A Grade debut, while Lachie Buchan slots back in defence. Tom Reid will move to starting ruck this week after Ollie Ormsby did his syndesmosis in his ankle, putting him in a moon boot for a few weeks. Armando Iannunzio also comes out as he and some others follow DJ Jono Duffy on his interstate tour 🤦♂️.
This sees a number of changes across all grades, as we battle injury, sickness, holidays and uni exams. The B Grade debuts Clohsey, Wake and Favretto, with many returning including "Big Red" Guerin, Sobels, and Robertson, while many old faces will fill spots for us across the C and D Grade - thank you to all of you. A special shoutout to Josh "Jang" Angus and 2022 C Grade Premiership Player (and undefeated King) Will "Tails" Taylor, who will line up in Lemon's Cs!
No milestones this week. But worth noting how close we are to two very big ones - Pistol 250 and Venks 200 both imminent!

Coach's report
It was a frustrating day for the group, with our intensity fluctuating too much across the four quarters. We never put together a complete quarter of footy, and at this level that gets exposed. Our inability to sustain pressure and consistency hurt us, particularly when we made some basic errors that cost us field position.
Too often we went backwards with ball in hand, which allowed the opposition to reset and put us under pressure. Those moments added up and prevented us from building any real momentum in the game.
To the players’ credit, we gave ourselves a chance late. The last 10 minutes showed what we’re capable of when our energy and intent lift — we were cleaner, more direct, and more aggressive around the contest. That surge put us in a position to potentially steal the game, but we left ourselves too much to do.
From a positives standpoint, our midfield group was strong. We clearly won the stoppage battle and had more influence on the game than our opposition mids. Will Kennett led the way with a strong performance up forward that was reward for his strong effort so far this season. He was well supported by Kane Pearson, Tully Kennett, Jack Carruthers, and Harry Willis — all of whom are in great form at the moment.
Ultimately, it’s a disappointing loss in what was a winnable game. We understand the implications this result has on our ladder position, and that needs to sharpen our focus moving forward. There’s enough there, but we need to bring a consistent four-quarter effort if we want to play the kind of footy we’re capable of.

The Kings produced a gritty and high-quality performance but fell just short in a narrow 1-point loss (52–51) against one of the competition’s strongest teams. Despite being undermanned and playing in tough conditions, the group showed resilience, intensity, and a strong commitment to their game plan.
The match began with excellent pressure and defensive organisation from the Kings, allowing them to control early play. However, missed opportunities going forward meant they were unable to fully capitalise on their dominance
The second quarter proved costly, as a couple of defensive lapses resulted in quick Edwardstown goals and an 8-point swing. While effort and intent remained strong, scoring opportunities were limited, allowing the opposition to gain momentum.
The Kings responded brilliantly in the third quarter with their best football of the day. Strong rebound and cleaner ball movement helped them overturn a 21-point deficit and briefly take the lead, demonstrating their ability to match top opposition when executing their system.
In the final term, the game was decided by key moments. While the Kings’ defensive efforts remained outstanding, a lack of composure and execution under pressure—combined with an opportunistic Edwardstown goal—proved decisive in the narrow loss.
Overall, the performance highlighted the team’s competitiveness, resilience, and belief, while reinforcing that improved composure, cleaner ball use, and better conversion of opportunities are the key areas needed to turn close contests into wins

The Queens headed out to the Parklands Saturday afternoon for a tough game against ladder-leaders Mitcham Hawks. It was always going to be a tough physical contest against the top side, and proved to be so, with the result ending the Queens winning streak.
The Queens started off with a strong first quarter, Ashlea Carter led the way with a strong effort in the centre. Amber Hopkins kicking the first two goals for the girls to help gain a small lead coming into quarter time.
The second quarter got away from the girls with Mitcham finding their rhythm and taking control of the contest, holding the Queens goalless for the quarter and managing to take over the scoreboard.
To the girls' credit, the Queens regrouped at halftime and held up defensively, holding the Hawks goalless for the second half. Down back, Jemima and Scarlett had some great last-minute efforts to hold the Hawks off.
From the middle, Lucy White and Indira were able to kick some timely goals for the Queens, providing a final push, but unfortunately it wasn't quite enough to make up the gap, therefore the Queens went down by 13 points.

The Kings faced a tough afternoon at home, going down 2.1-13 to Edwardstown’s 11.9-75 in wet, scrappy conditions that made clean football almost impossible.
Heavy rain turned the ground to glue and both sides struggled for clean possession early. The ball spent most of the day locked in packs, with turnovers and fumbles the story of the first half. Edwardstown adjusted quicker, using the slope to their advantage and converting in the second and third quarters to build a lead we couldn’t reel in.
Despite the scoreboard, there were plenty of individual efforts to be proud of. Down back, Charles Canny and Lachie Gurner were outstanding. Both read the wet conditions beautifully, taking strong marks and constantly repelling Edwardstown’s forward entries. Canny’s composure under pressure and Gurner’s spoil work kept us in the contest early and gave our mids a target to kick to.
Ash Rawlinson’s debut in the C’s was another highlight. Thrown into the ruck, he competed hard all day, giving us first use around the contest and winning his fair share of taps against a bigger opponent. A promising start to his senior career.

Simply fielding a side was an effort in itself this week, with many players unavailable across all grades due to exams. We managed to pull a few blokes out of retirement and welcome some new faces to the club to give ourselves the best chance possible, despite the odds being stacked against us.
The conditions made things even tougher. The oval resembled a pigsty, and our game plan was to embrace the conditions and keep the ball moving forward. Unfortunately, the Walkerville side was simply too good, running in numbers when they had possession and scoring freely throughout the game.
Despite the result, the scoreboard doesn't truly reflect the effort the boys put in. I was really pleased with the way we never dropped our heads, even when the game was effectively out of reach by halftime.
We put this one behind us and look forward to this coming week where we play Adelaide Uni in which should be a great contest.

Fletcher Adams – Stood up strongly once again and continues to show what a crafty big man he is. We're looking forward to seeing what he can provide to the club in the future.
