It wasn't our best day at Haslam last Saturday, going to Lockleys in the As and Cs. Our B Grade held up their end, with a good win over the Demons. The D Grade also had a fantastic win over Lockleys away, while the Queens unfortunately went down to Scotch on Friday night.
Time to bounce back against Seaton this week.

Strong wins for the B and D Grades. So good to see Jake's Ds bring it together for their second win of the year. Those boys having been working hard, and to see the work Jake is putting in coming to fruition is so good to see. The B Grade got the job done, but it wasn't without a poor start that resulted in a half-time rev-up from Wighty. The boys responded appropriately and took home the chocolates.
The A and C Grade had different stories, unfortunately unable to get over the line against Lockleys. A particularly disappointing loss for the A's who needed to put away the Demons to avoid possible relegation. Now we have more pressure on the coming weeks to get some wins and put distance from the bottom of the ladder.
The Queens played under the lights on Friday at Sctoch but also couldn't get the win. Despite this they still sit middle of the table and well within finals contention.

We were blasted by injuries last week, particularly in the A Grade game. Illman (concussion), Willis (broken wrist), H Read (hamstring), and J Carruthers (hamstring) all come out, while T Kennett and Gecz are also unavailable. We do however get the return of leader Archie Richardson who will be important for our young midfield. First year players Jonty Jamieson and Max Davis, who have been dominating in the Bings midfield, come in for their A Grade debut - well done lads! We also get a number of ins from players playing strong football in the B Grade.
As a result, the B Grade has a number of changes this week too. A few blokes on holidays and skipper Sam Carruthers out (hamstring) sees each line-group changed quite a bit. Huge news on Thursday night is that Nathan Tu will lead the group as captain this weekend! Despite the changes, Wighty was super positive about the ins, adamant we can get the job done in the wet against Seaton.
The Queens still hold strong numbers despite the Europe holiday drain. Hopefully they can get back on the winners list this week.

It was a disappointing result on Saturday, with one poor quarter ultimately proving costly in a really important game.
We started strongly in the first, tackling well, using the ball sensibly and clearly being really switched on. However, this was not the case in the second term. We gave the ball back to Lockleys too easily, had no ball security and as a result ended up playing most of the quarter in our back half. It was a really poor term, and this was highlighted by the fact we did not win any of the 31 stats we take each game. In the end we started to panic and allowed Lockleys to build a lead that we were unable to reel in.
To the players' credit we responded strongly after halftime, the effort and intent never wavered. We worked hard around the contest, won plenty of the ball, and gave ourselves opportunities to score. Unfortunately, we couldn't make the most of our chances when momentum was on our side. We were also hampered by injuries throughout the day as we lost Illman (head) just after halftime, Read and Carruthers pinged hamstrings in the last quarter and Willis valiantly went forward despite having fractured his wrist in the first quarter.
Our best players were Tom Reid, who battled strongly in the ruck all day, Jack Carruthers, who provided plenty of drive from wing and half back, Armando Iannunzio, whose pressure and three goals were important, Tyson Matthews, who consistently won the hard ball, and Tully Kennett, who led by example with his composure and commitment around the contest.
We'll take the lessons from this game, continue to work on our ball security, and look to improve next week.

We secured a hard-fought 24-point victory (58–34) in challenging conditions at Haslam, controlling large periods of the game but failing to fully capitalise on their dominance due to inaccurate kicking and missed scoring opportunities. Throughout the match, we demonstrated strong defensive structure, forward-half pressure, and an ability to restrict Lockleys' scoring opportunities.
The primary challenge was conversion efficiency. Despite generating significant forward entries and territorial dominance, our return of 7.16 highlighted missed opportunities that kept the opposition within reach longer than necessary. This was evident from the opening quarter, where early dominance resulted in six behinds, and again in the final quarter when seven scoring shots yielded only two goals.
Ball movement was at its best when the team remained composed, used shorter kicks, and attacked through the corridor. Conversely, a tendency to default to wide or down-the-line options reduced the effectiveness of forward entries. My game day notes consistently identified corridor use, stretching the ground, and creating higher-quality scoring opportunities as key opportunities for improvement.
Defensively, we performed strongly, limiting Lockleys to minimal inside-50 opportunities early and responding well when momentum shifted in the third quarter. The midfield's ability to adapt to a dominant opposition ruckman improved as the game progressed, while contested football and defensive support from key players helped regain control when required.
Overall, the result reinforces the team's developing ability to control games through pressure and system-based football. The next step is improving conversion, adhering to team structures, and maximising opportunities from periods of dominance.

The Queens went down to Scotch on Friday night in front of a vocal home crowd, Scotch had plenty of support on the sidelines.
The Queens started the ball with excellent
pressure around the ground and worked hard to limit Scotch’s opportunities. The game was neck and neck for majority of the first half on the scoreboard which was even at half time despite the Queens appearing to be more in control of the game.
Lucy White was a standout in the ruck,
giving Queen’s first use at stoppages and competing strongly all day against quality opposition. Her work rate and physical presence were important in keeping the midfield involved throughout the contest.
Willow also deserves recognition for her performance. Despite being physically targeted and pushed around by some of the Scotch players, she didn’t back off. She continued to compete hard, stayed focused on the contest and made an impact whenever the ball came her way.
The Queens were leading 24-17 going into the third quarter which was looking to be a good contest. Unfortunately, Scotch found another gear in the final quarter, taking advantage of all their to push ahead and win 36-25
The final result was disappointing, but the Queen’s should still be happy with a really hard fought game for the first three quarters. They will look to maintain this for all four quarters next week as they take on Lockleys this week at Haslam which is bound to be a good game!

Hosting 5th-placed Lockleys in a crucial clash, we were well below our best from the opening bounce and never managed to get the game on our terms. Lockleys applied consistent pressure throughout the afternoon and made us pay for our mistakes, running out convincing 13.9 (87) to 5.5 (35) winners.

Fletcher Adams took on the ruck duties admirably after Ash Rawlinson went down with an early injury, competing strongly and giving our midfielders every chance. Stewart Watts continued his consistent season with a hard-working display through the midfield, winning plenty of the football while applying strong tackling pressure around the contest.

Round 11 saw the D Grade travel to Lockleys on a cold Saturday morning. Heading into the contest, all the talk was about how this was a winnable game for our side. If we continued playing the way we had against Rostrevor the week before, Lockleys weren't going to be able to keep up with us.
The first term was a hard-fought, back-and-forth contest, with us taking a four-point lead into the first break. The message at quarter time was simple: more of the same. Everyone was playing their role exceptionally well, and we looked the better side all over the ground.
Leading by three goals at half-time, we knew we couldn't go back into our shells. Our third quarters had been an issue all season, often allowing opposition sides back into the game or the game getting away from us. To the credit of the backline, they stood tall and restricted Lockleys to just one goal in the third term.
The game was far from over, with Lockleys making a late push in the final quarter to give us a scare. However, we were simply too quick, carving our way through Lockleys' tiring defence to secure a well-deserved 24-point victory.
