GREENWASH FOR THE KINGS

A great day for the club with all teams recording wins. The Ds won at Haslam, the C grade got home in a thriller, the B grade came from behind to grab a narrow win, and the A grade came from 17 points down to win by a point, to make it a trifecta of tight victories at Plympton. We fought hard in every contest and got some rewards for all the hard work. Here’s how the “Greenwash” played out.

A Grade

Pembroke 6.7 (43) won at Plympton 5.12 (42)

The Kings had some big names back with ruckman Max Read returning, backman Harry Roberts in and key defender Dylan Hopkins slotting in for his first game since Round one. With a crosswind slightly favouring the end to which Plympton was kicking, the Kings backline had plenty of work to do in the early stages. The lads withstood the pressure well and as we started to get our running game going, we more than matched the Bulldogs. Both sides had chances to score but the wind was making it difficult until in time on Henry Read brilliantly picked off a miskick by a Plympton defender and slotted home our first goal. Plympton quickly replied with a good snap for goal, to regain the lead and hold a five-point advantage at quarter time.

The second term saw the Kings open well as Will Kennett kicked a good goal with his left foot from close range. Play was even over the next 10 minutes with both defences having to work hard as the scoring dried up. Towards the end of the term, Plympton got their game going and added two goals, to head in with an 11-point lead at half time.

The third term was tight and rugged as both sides cracked in, with Archie Richardson doing some great from the wing to get us forward. Eight minutes in he took a great grab, his kick found Tyson Matthews who marked and broke clear to kick a great goal. The game continued to be a tough scrap in the windy conditions until late in the term a shot from Plympton was deemed a goal, despite many present feeling it may have gone the other side of the post. Either way Plympton led by 11 points with a term to go.

With a lot on the line, Plympton kicked the first goal of the last quarter at the seven-minute mark. But the Kings wouldn’t go away as midway through the term, Mitch Rees kicked long towards Henry Read who won a free and goaled. Minutes later Magnus Illman won a clearance, his kick deep saw Matthews fly high to take the mark of the year! He calmly put it through, and the margin was suddenly under a goal. Hopkins and Ned Carruthers continued to control the backline and their good work saw the ball end up forward where a ball off a pack went into the hands of the running Richardson who kicked it right through the middle to put the Kings in front. The last few minutes were tight and nerve wracking, Plympton having a tough shot on the boundary which was rushed through. Moments later the siren went, the Kings getting up for their sixth win of the season to joyous scenes in what was a tense struggle all day. Best – Archie Richardson, Dylan Hopkins, Tully Kennett, Tyson Matthews, Will Kennett.

B GRADE

Pembroke 6.5 (41) won at Plympton 5.9 (39)

In a close game all day, Pembroke kicked the only goal of the first term thanks to a great snap from Fletcher Adams. The second quarter was hard fought in the windy conditions as Plympton hit the lead but good play late in the term by Matty Robertson and Sam Creighton saw Alex Favaretto mark and goal to make the margin just two-points at half time. Plympton were first to goal in the third term but then Riley Wake stretched high to take a mark and goal to keep us in touch. Later on clever play by Billy Edmonds who dished off the Koen Morrison saw the Kings goal again, but Plympton had the better of the term to add 3.1 to 2.1 and we trailed by eight points with a term to go.

The last term was a classic as our defence held firm under plenty of pressure. At the eight-minute mark after the ball went through several sets of hands, Archie Allen goaled on the left to narrow the margin. The next few minutes saw some dogged defence from the Kings, with a few scuffles breaking out as tempers frayed. Then a snap from Plympton rolled and rolled, hitting the post. Luke Lovelock cleared from full back and the ball eventually found Riley Wake who made a dashing run down the wing, taking several bounces before kicking towards Allen who won a free. He calmly put it through to give us the lead with just on six minutes remaining. In a tough last period, the lads dug deep in defence the ball as the ball was in Plympton forward line when the siren sounded. So, after some tough weeks, the B grade got their reward and held onto win by just two points.

C GRADE

Pembroke 5.9 (39) won at Plympton 5.6 (36)

The first term was even with Ash Rawlinson kicking our only goal. We started the second nicely as Harvey Wood goaled to set the wheels in motion. After an even period of play the Kings got two goals late as Eddie Cook snapped one through, while Wood kicked his second to give a lead of 20 points at half time.

Plympton worked back into the game, to kick two goals in the first eight minutes to narrow the margin. But then James O’Halloran took a solid mark and kicked a good long goal to give us a 14-point lead with a term to play. Plympton wouldn’t go away as they kicked two goals in the last quarter and with seconds remaining won a free, 30 metres out on a slight angle kicking to the racecourse end. The siren then sounded, the kick went left for a behind as the Kings held on by three points to maintain their spot in the top five. Thanks to John Favretto for filming the game as always.

D GRADE

Pembroke 12.6 (78) def Golden Grove 9.6 (60) at Haslam.

Some old Kings were back in the colours for the big clash at Haslam. Jack Green featured early in the play as the lads got off to a great start. The brothers George, Mitch and Harrison kicked the first couple of goals and when Pete Jones put one through, the Kings had three on the board. Haz kicked his second but then the visitors got into the game to kick their first. Green continued to win plenty of ball and he kicked truly to give the team a 28-point lead at quarter time.

The second term saw both teams crack in; Tom Kluska had a great term winning plenty of ball as Mitch George kicked his second of the day. Jake Elias kicked a good goal, but Golden Grove would not go away kicking one to keep them in the game. Green then kicked his second, to put the Kings four goals up at half time.

The third term saw Golden Grove throw all they had at Pembroke, kicking an early goal. Green responded to kick his third thanks to good play by Harrison George and Adam Zeni. Pete Jones had a big term kicking a couple as at one stage tempers frayed. The lead got out to five goals at three quarter time, the lads set for a win.

The last term saw the visitors fight it out to the end, the Kings defence having to work hard to keep them out. They added three goals but coach Jake Elias kicked the sealer to put win number three in the bank, the final margin 18 points. It was great to see Green, Haz George, Zeni, Alex Breda all play, along with father-son combination Bill and Archie Allert turn out and be part of the victory.
