President's Report

No. 15, Round 14 — Written by Lawrie Colliver

A & B GRADE LOSE AT NORTH HAVEN | C GRADE WIN | QUEENS LOSE TO END YEAR

The day started well at North Haven as the C grade won, but things slipped as the B grade led early and were well beaten, one bad quarter costs the A grade as they also went down. The Queens lost dropping to fifth and will miss finals.

A Grade

Pembroke 9.2 (56) lost at North Haven 11.7 (73)

In fine conditions the Kings were right in the contest early as Sam Gecz made a great forward 50 tackle and goaled after eight minutes. Then shortly after some good run through the midfield from Jack Carruthers saw Gecz on his own again to snap his second. Some errors crept into the game from the Kings defence and North Haven lifted their effort all around the ground to dominate the rest of the term. They added three goals to lead by 21 points at quarter time, during the term Ollie Borda copped a shoulder injury which saw him ruled of the rest of the game.

The early part of the second quarter saw North Haven well on top in all departments as the Kings performance dropped off. Poor and inaccurate disposal down back put us under extra pressure as a hungry opposition added three goals in the first seven minutes to extend their lead. After an even patch of play, North Haven goaled twice towards the back end of the term to all up add 5.2 to nothing, and we were down by 41 points at half time.

North Haven goaled after five minutes of the third term, as things looked like they might really get out of hand on the scoreboard but then came revival from the men in green and gold. A Tully Kennett tackle was rewarded with a free out of the middle, Jamison Rankine ran past and kicked to Archie Richardson who then found an open Armando Iannunzio who kicked a much-needed major. The Kings were now having plenty of play as Gecz was marking well up forward, he had two chances to goal within range but sadly missed both. At the 19-minute mark Will Kennett won a free for a clever tackle, the ball quickly moved forward to Iannunzio who put through his second. A few minutes later Tully Kennett found Iannunzio who marked and copped one for his efforts, goaling after gaining a 25-metre penalty. Then from the next centre break, Iannunzio found Rory Switajewski who marked and put through a major, to get the margin back to 23 points at the last change, with our lads a sniff of a chance.

Some sloppy defence saw North Haven kicked the opening goal of the final term, but the Kings didn’t stop cracking in, the contest very even around the ball as the Magpies started to tire. The home side put the shutters up with a loose man in defence which freed up Kane Pearson who was winning a lot of ball behind half back. Then midway through the term Louis McRostie goaled after a free from a good tackle inside forward 50. The run from the Kings kept coming, into time-on Iannunzio snapped truly for his fourth and when Jony Jamieson goaled, the deficit was 11 points with a minute left.

In the last passage of play, North Haven goaled on the siren, but it had been a spirited comeback from Pembroke after being in real strife at half time. Unfortunately late in the game skipper Ollie Harms went off with a hamstring strain. Best – Tom Reid, Tyson Matthews, Archie Richardson, Armando Iannunzio, Oliver Harms.

B Grade

Pembroke 7.7 (49) lost at North Haven 13.5 (83)

The first term started well for the Kings as late call up Eddie Cook kicked the first goal of the game. North Haven then had the better of the play as they kicked the next couple to take the lead. Good ball movement saw Riley Wake goal for the Kings and when Archie Allen slotted one through Pembroke led 3.2 to 2.3 at quarter time. That momentum continued into the second term when Cook goaled again to push the lead out further. But then North Haven took control to kick the next five goals as the Kings dropped off, the Magpies up by 18 points at half time.

After an early goal to North Haven, Toby Wilks had a purple patch in the early part of the third term, kicking two much needed goals to get the margin back to 12 points. The next phase of the game saw some tight footy as we had two chances to goal but missed both. Then not long before the break the Magpies goaled to retain the three-goal lead they had at half time. The last term saw the hosts goal twice which all but put the game out of reach. Sam Ross in his first game for a long time kicked a goal but North Haven had the better of the last quarter to run out 34-point winners.

Queens

Pembroke 5.4 (34) lost to Westminster 7.9 (51) at Haslam

Needing to win to stay in fourth spot, the Queens started well when Amber Hopkins goaled early in the game. Later on Westminster kicked one themselves and held a four-point lead at quarter time. Westminster kicked the first goal of the second term, but midway through the quarter the Queens had a purple patch. Amber Hopkins made a great tackle deep in attack, the free kick saw her kick her second goal. Then a few minutes later Lucy Hammond followed up some good play to get a handball off Hopkins, kicking a goal to give the home side the lead.
After half time Westminster was first to goal then Alice Emmett had a great chance for a quick reply, but her set shot hit the post. Unfortunately for the Queens they conceded the next couple of goals but then late in the term Hopkins won a free to goal which reduced the margin to 10 points with a term to go.
With all to play for, it was tight for the first five minutes until Hopkins kicked her fourth to get the margin under a goal. Unfortunately, a minute later a shot from long range by Westminster rolled through the goals to increase their lead. The Queens had plenty of ball but couldn’t get it into the forward 50 and with three minutes left Westminster kicked the sealer to book a place in the finals at our expense.

Best – Ash Carter, Amber Hopkins (4 goals), Lucy Hammond, Indi Panelli, Roszi Bentley. Congrats to Amber who kicked 23 goals to tie for the League goalkicking award.

C Grade

Pembroke 12.7 (79) won at North Haven 4.8 (32)

The Kings got off to great to start, moving the ball forward well as Harvey Wood kicked five goals in the first term. The game tightened in the second but the Kings defence was in charge keeping them goalless as we led 7.5 to 0.4 at half-time. North Haven kicked three in a row out of the break as the margin narrowed but from then on the Kings regained control to kick five of the last six goals of the game to run out 47-point winners.

Best was Harvey Wood (7 goals), along with Bill Newman, Hal Ives, Will Holland, Jack Robinson.

D Grade

Pembroke had the bye.
