A GRADE WIN OVER KILBURN | B AND C HAVE BIG WINS | LOSSES TO D’S & QUEENS

A much better weekend for the club with the A grade getting a desperately needed win, while the B & C grade scored percentage boosting victories.

A Grade

Pembroke 13.9 (87) def Kilburn 11.10 (76) at Haslam

On a glorious day, the Kings had a terrific start with Ollie Borda finding Henry Read who goaled after two minutes. Borda was in the action again moments later, his juggling mark resulting in another goal. Kilburn worked themselves into the game kicking the next three goals to take the lead, but then Jonty Jamieson kicked a clever goal to put us back in front at the midway point of the term. Late in the quarter some excellent ball movement from the backline saw Tully Kennett hit Henry Read with a pass, the full-forward duly slotting home his second. With seconds left in the term, Kilburn won a free and goaled, the Kings ahead by just two points at the first change.

In the early moments of the second quarter, Louis McRostie found Henry Read who put through his third, but a few minutes later a kick across half back came unstuck and Kilburn took full advantage to goal. The next five minutes saw some tight footy, but then Pete Clayer found Henry Read with a ripper of a pass and he kicked his fourth. The Kings started to get on top as the elusive Mitch Thiele kicked to Read who put through his fifth. Kilburn’s only answer was to engage in some rough stuff as Tully Kennett won a free, he kicked to Borda who also won a free, his straight kick extending the lead. A brilliant tackle by Armando Iannuzio was rewarded in the forward pocket which saw him slot through a major. When Archie Richardson won a free and found Read, he kicked his fourth for the quarter and his sixth to half time as the Kings went in with a 32-point lead.

Kilburn came out hard at the start of the third quarter and goaled early to reduce the deficit. Shortly after the Kings kicked in from a behind and worked it forward, Borda in the right spot to mop up a defensive miskick from the Chics to goal. A bad defensive error from Kilburn saw Rory Switajewski win a free on the boundary, his kick sailed right through the middle to see the Kings lead 12.3 to 6.6. The visitors then played their best footy of the day as they scored four majors on the bounce while we had three good chances but couldn’t goal and with a term to go the margin was just 11 points. Late in the term Max Read sustained an injury in the centre and was off the ground for the remainder of the match.

With the game on the line, the early part of the final quarter saw some tight footy until Kilburn won a free from 40 metres out on a tight angle and hit the post, much to the delight of the Pembroke supporters. A few minutes later the Kings went forward, Iannunzio won a free but missed to score a behind and then from the kickout Tully Kennett marked and passed to Seb Wilckens who goaled to put the team three goals clear.

Then came a moment of controversy as Kilburn had a set shot to the Parade end, the goal umpire sought assistance from the field umpires, and it was ruled a behind, much to the annoyance of the opposition. Will Kennett had a chance that just missed and then at the 17-minute mark the Chics goaled again to reduce the margin to 12 points. For the next five minutes it was tense stuff as the Kings kept the ball in their forward area, before Kilburn went inside 50 and had a set shot which was fisted through on the goal line by skipper Ollie Harms. The final two minutes were nerve racking as the lads held onto to win by 11 points and secure our fifth win of the season. Best was Tyson Matthews who won important ball all day, Henry Read (6 goals), Jamison Rankine who did a great job curtailing Anthony Wilson, Harry Roberts in defence and the ever-reliable Tully Kennett.

B Grade

Pembroke 21.11 (137) def Kilburn 5.4 (34)

The B grade started well adding 7.2 to 0.1 in a dominant first term. The second term saw a better effort from the opposition, but we added 4.4 to 2.1 to have a match winning lead of 58 points at half time. The second half saw us continue to be too strong as Toby Wilks, Lucas Saunders and Riley Wake all ended up with four goals each to ensure a percentage boosting win.

Best - Ned Carruthers, Lachlan Buchan, Riley Wake, Mitchell Rees, Archie Williams.

Queens

Pembroke 6.2 (38) lost at Modbury 6.5 (41)

The Queens started well as Alice Emmett kicked a clever goal inside the first two minutes. Alice Montgomery was in everything early getting the ball forward as Pembroke dominated the first seven minutes. Modbury fought back to goal but then Amber Hopkins showed her speed to post a quick reply. Towards the back end of the term the Hawks kicked a clever goal, and after Montgomery hit the post, the margin was just a point the Queens way at quarter time.
Pembroke were first to goal in the second term when Ash Carter read the ball well at a ball up and kicked truly. The Queens maintained their lead until late in the term Modbury goaled, to level the match up at half time.

In the opening minute of the third term, Chloe Tucker kicked a nice pass to Hopkins who marked and goaled. A few minutes later Hopkins was in the action again to goal on the run to increase the Queens lead. Modbury got a goal back to reduce the margin to four points at three quarter time.
After a tight period of play, Modbury worked the ball forward to soccer a goal off the ground at the six-minute mark to take the lead. Play see-sawed and then with Modbury deep in attack they won a free and goaled to put them nine points ahead with two minutes to play. The Queens took the ball from the centre and Hopkins kicked her fourth, but time ran out as play restarted with just a few seconds left, Modbury winners by three points.

Best – Alice Montgomery, Ashlea Carter, Ella Manning, Willow McConnell-Psaltis, Amber Hopkins who kicked four goals.

C Grade

Pembroke 22.13 (145) def Kilburn 1.5 (11)

The C grade hit the ground running kicking five goals to one in the first term, including a great snap from Will Edmonds. Harvey Wood was getting on top in the forward with plenty of opportunities, while the backline was giving away nothing. It was more of the same in the third term as we scored 4.3 to nil and then the icing on the cake came in the last when the Kings added 10 goals to finish with a 134-point win.

Best - Stewart Watts, Harvey Wood (6 goals), Eddie Cook (4 goals), Fletcher Adams, Hal Ives.

D Grade

Pembroke 6.4 (40) lost at Adelaide University 21.18 (144).

After a decent first term by the Kings, Uni took control in the second to kick 10.8 to 1.1 in the second to lead by 74 points at half-time. The lads soldiered on well in the second half but were outclassed going down by 104 points. Best - Mitchell George (2 goals), Peter Jones, Fred Ligertwood, Andy Lee, Oscar LeMessurier (2 goals).
