President's Report

B & D GRADE HAVE GREAT WINS. A’S, C’S AND QUEENS GET BEATEN

A mixed weekend, the A grade and Queens suffered narrow losses, and the C grade got a bit of touch up, but the Bs and Ds had great victories. As a club we have to keep at it, with winnable games coming up in the next few weeks.

This week

A Grade

Pembroke 10.9 (69) def by Lockleys 12.6 (78) at Haslam

On a soft deck after a 50mm of rain during the week, the A grade started well as Harry Willis and Jack Carruthers combined to get the ball to Armando Iannunzio who goaled inside the first minute. It became a tight contest as Lockleys broke through to goal midway through the term to level the game up. Skipper Ollie Harms and ruckman Tom Reid were doing great work in defence and in the second part of the term the Kings started to get on top, as Henry Read began to have an impact up forward kicking back-to-back goals. Lockleys were on the back foot, chipping it around and found it hard to get the ball out of their defence and when Iannunzio goaled late, the Kings went in 19-points up at quarter time.

The second term saw Lockleys come out with more purpose as they took on Pembroke head on, kicking longer and putting pressure on the backline. With three goals in the first 10 minutes, they were well back in the game as the momentum changed. The Kings had forays forward but just couldn’t goal as the Demons took charge to add 7.2 to just two behinds, leading by nearly four goals at half time.

At the start of the third term Mitch Thiele kicked a great long goal, but then back in the centre of the ground Magnus Illman and Will Kennett collided heads and both needed to come off, with Illman sadly ruled out of the game. Then came a costly turnover across half back saw the Demons goal to lead again by 23 points.

The Kings did lift as Iannunzio goaled and when Tyson Matthews kicked a ripper, Pembroke were right back in it. Several chances were missed by the Kings and then with just seconds left before the siren, Lockleys goaled to have a 14-point advantage going into the final term.

With the game up for grabs, Lockley were first to goal after two minutes but shortly the Kings rallied as Read goaled from a great mark. Tensions had been simmering and when Thiele kicked a goal, he was bumped after the ball went through, after which a melee developed, Thiele awarded another free to goal before the ball went back to the centre. At the 22-minute mark a long kick from Tyson Matthews went off hands and Will Kennett had a chance to goal right on the line, but missed, had it gone through the margin would have been less than a kick. Lockleys then hung on keeping the ball forward in the last few minutes to win by nine points. Best - Tom Reid (19 disposals, 35 hitouts, Jack Carruthers (25 touches), Armando Iannunzio (3 goals), Tyson Matthews (21), Tully Kennett (27).

B Grade

Pembroke 7.16 (58) def Lockleys 5.4 (34) at Haslam

The first term saw the Kings up and about Jono Duffy rewarded for a tackle in attack that saw him goal. Skipper Sam Carruthers also slotted one through in a quarter where we could have been further ahead as we kicked an inaccurate 2.6 to 1.0.

The second term saw Koen Morrison find Sam Creighton who goaled and shortly after Jono Duffy did some clever work from a throw in to kick another. The Kings missed a few other scoring chances and then just before the siren, Lockleys won a free and two 25m penalties to kick a goal, the Kings ahead by 19 points at half time.

Lockleys played the better footy in the third term, goaling twice in the first seven minutes to get the margin back to a goal. Toby Wilks then eased the pressure with a clever snap for a major, as we went in 13 points ahead with a term to go.

Coach Wightman urged his players for a better effort, and they responded well to finish off the visitors. Goals to Toby Wilks and then skipper Carruthers, who kicked the sealer to record a solid 24-point win.

Queens

Pembroke 3.7 (25) def by Scotch 5.6 (36) at Scotch

The Queens had a much better start than last week, with Ailis Nolan kicking a clever goal to give the team the early lead. Lucy White was winning most of the hit outs in ruck, giving her on-ball players good use of the ball. Scotch improved their effort and replied to make the difference three points at quarter time. Scotch played the better footy in a scrappy second term and if they had taken their chances could well have led at half time.

With scores tied at the long break the Queens played some good footy in the cold and damp conditions as Lucy Hammond goaled off the ground. A little later the Queens won a centre break, Amber Hopkins kicked a goal, which saw the margin out to a seven-points with a quarter to play.
The last term saw Scotch goal early as they started to get on top in front their home crowd. They were applying plenty of pressure and made the most their chances going forward to add 3.1 to 0.1 to run out deserved winners by 11 points.

C Grade

Pembroke 5.5 (35) lost to Lockleys 13.8 (86)

The Cs was ambushed early by a focused Lockleys side, the visitors kicking the first four goals of the match. The Kings lifted their efforts to goal twice to trail by 11 points at the end of the quarter. The lads played some good footy in the second term and with the margin under a goal at half time, it was anyone’s game. Lockleys came out in the third term and took control, adding four goals to none as their key forward dominated proceedings. Sadly, the last term was more of the same, as the Demons went on with the job to win by 51 points. Best - Stewart Watts, Fraser Edginton, Fletcher Adams, Alistair Linke.

D Grade

Pembroke 10.10 (70) won at Lockleys 7.4 (46)

A fired-up Kings headed to Lockleys with one thing on their mind this week – a win! After a close first term, the lads played a great second adding 3.4 to 1.1 to lead by 19 points. The third term was even and with a sniff of a victory in their nostrils, the Kings went on with the job to record their second win of the year in a great result for playing coach Jake Elias and his merry band of players. Lads Overseas

Fred McClure has been playing cricket for Letchworth Garden in the Hertfordshire Premier League and to date has scored 435 runs at 36.25 including an unbeaten 118 in a thrilling last ball three-wicket win on May 16. He celebrated as only Freddie can when the winning run were made off the last ball of the match. Freddie also had a trip to Amsterdam last week, as you do when over in that part of the world!

While Louis McRostie has been playing in the A grade all season, brother Darcy is currently at Old Elizabethan’s in the Herts Division 2A League and has scored 248 runs at 31, with a best of 87 off 61 balls against Radlett Cricket Club.
