President's Report

PAST PLAYERS DAY | A, B & C GRADE ALL WIN | QUEENS DRAW at KENSI OVAL

On behalf of the club thanks to everyone who came out on Past Players Day. The weather was terrific, the turnout of 90 for lunch was fantastic and the players responded accordingly with three wins. It’s a great springboard for the club as we move into the second half of the season.

A Grade

Pembroke 14.15 (99) def Adelaide Uni 5.0 (30) at Haslam

After a dry week the Haslam deck was in good nick for a must win game against the bottom side. Kings legend Peter Adcock tossed the coin, but it was Uni who came to play goaling inside the first minute, as they ran the ball well in the early stages. After several misses by the Kings, Tully Kennett won a free on the back of a fracas and duly slotted it through for our first goal. Kennett and Harry Willis were starting to get on top in the midfield, with Kane Pearson providing good run but we weren’t making enough of our inside 50s as several shots at goal went astray. Uni then got the ball forward to kick a goal to be in front as we entered time-on. Then things clicked into gear as Willis picked out Henry Read with a great pass, as he marked and goaled. Minutes later Read won a free on the boundary line and slotted it through to give us a 13-point lead at quarter time.

The second term saw a scrappy contest, with both sides cracking in hard. Midway through the term Uni linked up well to score a goal as the game tightened up, but then in time-on Will Kennett won a free and goaled to put us 16 points clear at half time.

The third term saw Uni goal after three minutes, and it was game on. But the Kings clicked into gear as Tully Kennett’s ripper of a kick found Armando Iannunzio who goaled. Mitch Thiele found Henry Read with a precise pass, which saw him goal from 45m out. Soon after a Uni turnover saw Jamison Rankine make a great tackle, the ball spilling to Will Kennett who put it through. Then it was Thiele to Read once more who kicked his fourth. The backline led by skipper Ollie Harms were giving nothing away while providing plenty of run as Jack Carruthers found Read who kicked another. Sam Gecz marked well and goaled and when Read won a free to kick his sixth goal, Pembroke had added seven unanswered goals to lead by 54 points at the last break.

With a bit of the sting out of the game, the last term saw the Kings add 3.3 to 1.0 with Read kicking one more to finish the day with seven, with Jamison Rankine and Tom Duffy adding one each, the final margin 69 points.

It was great to see so many people there to enjoy the win, especially players from the 2016 and 2022 A grade Premiership teams, who kicked on well into the evening back at the Kensi.

B Grade

Pembroke 16.13 (109) def Adel Uni 5.4 (34) at Haslam

The first term saw an even contest (Kings up 4.2 to 3.0), with Eddie Elias in the thick of it with some good work forward of centre. Jono Duffy kicked a nice goal and veteran Peter Clayer also scored one to put the side up by eight points at quarter time.

The lads kicked away in the second to add 5.4 to three behinds, as Lucas Saunders kicked a couple, including a nice snap as the margin went out to 33 points. The third quarter saw the lead extended, as the lads added 2.5 to 1.1, Riley Wake kicking a clever mid-air goal to the Parade end. The last quarter saw us finish off well as Saunders snapped one through to get his fourth, Riley Wake also converting in the last term to also finish with four.

Best - Eddie Elias, Archie Allen, Rory Switajewski, Tom Felice, Riley Wake.

Queens

Pembroke 6.6 (42) def with Flinders Park 6.6 (42) at Kensi Oval

The Queens started slowly giving up the first three goals but finally got going in the second quarter through Ailis Nolan who bounced one through from a long range on the boundary. Nolan soon kicked another and when Chloe Tucker crumbed a nice goal, the Queens had the lead by a point at half time.

In a tight third quarter Ella Manning went off with a knee injury as the Queens pushed forward with some good run out of the backline, as Amber Hopkins kicked a good goal. A few minutes later Flinders Park scored a quick reply but then Hopkins took a nice mark and goaled, putting the Queens nine points clear. Just before the end of the quarter, Flinders Park got a goal to make it a one-point ball game, with a term to go.

Flinders Park had the ball in attack for the early part of the last quarter and goaled to retake the lead. A little later Amber Hopkins took a nice mark and put through her third goal, which levelled the scores with five minutes to go. Flinders Park missed from close range to put them a point clear and in the last moments of the game, Hopkins had a flying shot at goal but just missed as the siren sounded, the match ending in a draw.

C Grade

Pembroke 8.7 (55) def Adel Uni 6.7 (43)

The “glamours” lads of the 1986 and 1996 Premiership sides made great speeches in the rooms before the game, the lads came out inspired and kicked five goals to two to take an early lead against the unbeaten Uni. Then the Blacks came back strongly in the second term to all but level things up at half time.

The third term saw the Kings stick to the task, winning the term to lead by seven points with a quarter left. The last term saw a real arm wrestle as we managed to hang in there and hold out Uni with some great defensive marks in the last five minutes. With time running out we managed a late goal to grab a great win to start Past Players Day. Best - Max Nicholls, Jack Robinson, Ash Rawlinson, Stewart Watts, Josh Angus

D Grade

Pembroke 4.10 (34) lost to Rostrevor OC 10.15 (75) at Campbelltown Oval.

ROCS started well against the Kings kicking four goals to one in the first term. With some of the lads from school turning out, the Kings had a bit of run and carry in the second quarter and took it right up to the homeside. They battled on in the second half and were far from disgraced going down by 41 points. Best – Will Belej, Mitchell George (two goals), Hugo Sutton, Jack Dearman.
